Kari Griggs-Martin Kari first learned she had breast cancer when she was 26. As a five year cancer survivor, Kari defied the odds and had her first child, Kyle Truitt Martin. During her treatment, Kari took a pill that could potentially cause early menopause, so having Kyle is truly a miracle. After this video was made, Kari and her husband, David, found out that they will be expecting their second child in September. Kari’s mission is to help educate women & men about early detection and to break the misconception that this disease only affects those in the 40s.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure – Houston Affiliate In 1991, the Houston Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure was established with the mission to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures. Since that time, the Komen Houston Affiliate has provided more than $5 million to fund breast cancer research and more than $12.4 million in the greater Houston community to fight the disease. Every year, The Komen Houston Race for the Cure® plays an important part in raising funds for the foundation. As it continues to grow annually, with more than 29,000 participants in 2007, this event has become the largest foot race in Houston. From the net income of funds received from the Race and other events, up to 75% is granted to non-profit organizations that make available breast cancer education, screening and treatment for patients throughout the seven counties it serves. The remainders of the net income funds are awarded through grants for breast cancer research. Website: www.komen-houston.org
